With an already imposing portfolio of fashion, editorial, advertising, film and television projects, Michael Bednark has proven himself a young and talented production designer. He earned a degree in set and costume design from New York University’s Tisch School and continued the study of his craft with multiple visits to England’s prestigious Pinewood Studio where he worked under renowned art director Terry Ackland-Snow (Batman, Aliens).
Raised in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Michael enjoyed the rigors of an industrious, rural upbringing. Growing up in a family of skilled craftsman, he took an immediate interest in construction, mechanics and carpentry. Whether peering over his grandfather’s shoulder as he worked on automobiles or restoring his own vintage Vespa, from a young age he showed interest in learning how things work. While aiding his father in his custom cabinet shop, Michael attained the necessary design sense and attention to detail of fine woodwork. With this blend of handiness and an eye for design, he began building sets at the age of eight, a labor of love that continued through high school.
Today, working as a professional set designer, he hones these childhood skills and serves as a strong leader, overseeing every facet of a set build.
Michael’s live/work space, in Gowanus, Brooklyn, is a true testament to his love for design. Home to Bednark Studio, the production company he founded along with his brother, James Bednark, the industrial carriage house serves as a full service design and production studio. Once a nearly uninhabitable building, he has created a modern space which blends Brooklyn industrial chic with traditional colonial and nautical elements, reminiscent of his sea side childhood home.
